Deepa Isac is the General Counsel at Democracy Fund, an independent foundation working to ensure that our political system is able to withstand new challenges and deliver on its promise to the American people. As General Counsel, Deepa leads the Legal Team to provide guidance to our program and operations teams on a variety of in-house matters as well as to support grantees and Democracy Fund’s extended network.
Deepa previously served as General Counsel and also Chief of Staff at Greenpeace USA, where she served as in-house counsel for over 14 years. She also served as General Counsel at Indivisible Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating and lifting up a grassroots movement of local groups to realize progressive policies and elect progressive leaders. These positions entailed legal guidance across a range of matters such as employment and labor, nonprofit organizations, campaign finance, tax compliance and contract law. Prior to these positions, Deepa was as an Assistant Public Defender in Rochester, New York where she defended the interests of the indigent. Before joining the public defender’s office, Deepa was an Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, where she prosecuted civil violations of consumer protection and antitrust laws against corporate parties. Most recently, Deepa served as Of Counsel at Handley Farah & Anderson, a law firm that focuses on civil rights matters, exploited foreign workers, antitrust and consumer protection. She has also served on the Board of Directors of Greenpeace USA and Rainforest Action Network.
Deepa obtained her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and her law degree from Emory University.
