Our democracy has never served everyone, so it’s not enough to just fix what’s broken. To build a future that fully serves the American people, it will take bold and innovative action to reimagine our democracy and make that vision real.
Why This Work Matters
The state of our democracy impacts the issues that affect people’s daily lives from healthcare to finances to housing. We’re witnessing that impact.
Rising isolation and the loss of trusted, community relationships have allowed misinformation, harmful policies, and abuses of power to take hold. As a result, many Americans feel increasingly fearful, powerless, and less willing to help others.
Our country’s future depends on moving toward a more community-centered mindset.
Our Approach
We support the movements and leaders exploring new ways for community relationships to flourish, for people to find and use trustworthy news and information, and for the government to better represent and serve the American people.
This work requires us to look decades into the future to create long-term, enduring change. Experimentation and sharing our learnings widely are key components of our approach.
In practice, some of the efforts we fund:
- Scale community-focused news and information that centers people over profit.
- Support narrative campaigns that influence how the public views democracy.
- Explore options for large-scale changes to institutions like our two-party, winner-take-all election systems.
